Community of Vidal Junction. South via California highway #95 to communities of Vidal, CA - Blythe, CA. South access to Blythe Intaglios. The Blythe Intaglios are a group of huge figures found on the ground near Blythe, California, approximately 15 miles north of downtown Blythe, just west of U.S. Highway 95 near the Colorado River. The largest human figure measures 171 feet long. A total of six distinct figures can be found in three locations, along with a human figure at each location, and an animal figure in two locations. The figures date back to between 450 and 2,000 years ago. According to the Native Americans (Mohave and Quechan Indians) inhabiting the lower Colorado River area, the human figures symbolize Mastamho, who is the creator of all life. The animal figures represent one of two mountain lions, named Hatakulya, who helped in the creation. In ancient times, sacred ceremonial dances were held in the area honoring the creation. |
