Alamosa, Colorado |
City of Alamosa, Colorado. Alamosa is a notable tourist town with many nearby attractions including the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. The town hosts a Sunshine Summerfest on the Rio Festival which occurs the first weekend in June. This is where Byway Los Caminos Antiguos starts its journey from on state Highway #17. This byway travels through The Great Sand Dunes, one of nature's most painstaking creations. These huge drifing sand dunes, hundreds of feet high and more than a thousand miles from the nearest ocean beach, accumulated over thousands of years due to winds and sand sweeping against the west face of the Sangre de Cristo Range. Los Caminos Antiguos travels through Colorado's oldest surviving community, the oldest church (Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Conejos), and one of its first military posts (Fort Garland). |
