North Carolina state line at Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park |
This road is continuing from Hwy 441 from Gatlinburg Tennessee. Newfound Gap is the state line between Tenessee and North Carolina. The Appalachian Trail crosses here, so you can 'hike' a short section of the 'AT'. There are also restrooms here. The scenery from here is fantastic! |

At 10 locations in the park are developed campgrounds maintained by the National Park Service, namely Abrams Creek, Look Rock, Big Creek, Deep Creek, Smokemont, Balsam Mountain, Cades Cove, Elkmont, Cosby, and Cataloochee. Side road to Clingmans Dome, the highest point in Tennesse |
This is a seven mile detour to see Clingmans Dome. The views from parking area at the end is worth the drive alone. There is a steep hike to the top of the Dome, but on a clear day it is well worth it! At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
