Black Hills, SD. National Forest Eagle Cliff Hiking Trail |
West side of highway. In the mid-1980s, local skiing enthusiasts developed the Eagle Cliff Trails. It became popular because you can create your own adventure. Its 21 intertwining loop and dead-end trails are both fun and challenging at every turn. There are short, rugged and remote trails as well as long, looping trails affording a range of difficulty. One of the highlights of this trail system is the chance to create a unique experience by intermixing the trails. |

Preacher Smith of Deadwood Gulch.-
Henry Weston Smith, was born in Ellington Connecticut, Jan 10 1828. At 23 he became a Methodist exhorter. This led to ordination in the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1862 he inlisted in the Union Army. Caring for the wounded may have turned his mind to healing, for he studied the practice of medicine & was licenced in 1867.
In 1867 he joined the gold rush to the Black Hills, where he preached on the streets of Deadwood.
On Sunday after service in Deadwood, he set out for Crook City to preach & along the way he was shot. |

CROW BUTTES - Crow Buttes located in Harding County, SD;at this point, was the scene of a bizzare battle between the Crow and the Sioux Indians in the summer of 1882. Sioux men ravaged a crow camp, destroying it. Crow warriors fled to the top of the buttes with the Sioux chasing them. Without water, the crow warriors died of thirst. Subsequently the nearby 'Canyon of the Skulls',to the northwest was filled with skeletons of the Sioux who died after contacting a fever from the Crows. |
