Chesterfield County |
Eastern boundary. Chesterfield County was named after Lord Chesterfield (1694-1773), an English statesman. It was established in 1785. Its county seat is the town of Chesterfield, but Cheraw is the oldest town having been settled around 1748. The towns of Cheraw and Chesterfield were briefly occupied by General Sherman's troops when they passed through this area during the Civil War. Cheraw State Park, founded in 1934, is the oldest South Carolina state park. Jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie (1917-1993) came from Chesterfield County.
