Port St. Lucie Blvd. - Exit # 142 - Florida's Turnpike
City of St. Lucie, Florida. It is common belief that the Spanish people first introduced the name 'St. Lucie' to the area. Fort Santa Lucia was built by the Spanish at the Jupiter Inlet in 1565. Construction of this fort started on December 13, feast day of the Roman Catholic Saint Lucia. In 1567, Pedro Menendez de Aviles established a colony called 'Santa Lucia' between Vero Beach and Stuart. The area is identified as Santa Lucia in old Spanish maps.
